With a fresh wind from Sweden comes the new Volvo EX30, the smallest SUV in the history of the brand and at the same time the cheapest electric model offered by Volvo. This premium subcompact SUV is marketed as a city-friendly and affordable alternative to the existing electric SUVs, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge. Prices start at 36,000 euros, which is great!
Volvo EX30, which was unveiled in Milan, Italy, occupies an important place in Volvo's electric range. With its length of 4,233 meters (166.6 inches), width of 1,837 meters (72.3 inches) and height of 1,555 meters (61.2 inches), the EX30 offers the optimal combination of compactness and spaciousness. Its base weight is 1,830 kilograms (4,034 pounds), which ensures a low center of gravity and even weight distribution, key to a comfortable and safe ride.
The interior of the EX30 follows a minimalist Scandinavian design, where the center of the action is a 12.3-inch single infotainment screen, and above it extends a sound bar that covers the entire upper part of the armature under the windshield.
The EX30 will be available in two drive versions: Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Engine Performance. The first variant boasts a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 200 kilowatts (268 horsepower) and 343 Nm of torque, with battery capacity 64 kilowatt hours. This combination provides a range of approx 443 kilometers (275 miles) per charge. Twin Engine Performancee version adds a front engine to drive the all four wheels, with a combined power 315 kilowatts (422 horsepower) and 543 Nm of torque. That's enough to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour (about 97 km/h) in just 3.4 seconds, which EX30 ranks at the top of the fastest accelerating production cars of the Volvo brand.
Volvo EX30 will sell for price US$34,950 in the US and for about 36,000 euros in Europe (according to the first information obtained), which puts it at a comparable price to internal combustion SUVs of a similar size. And the price is extremely affordable.
“The all-electric EX30 may be our smallest SUV to date, but it's very important to our customers and to us as a company,” said Jim Rowan, our Chief Executive Officer. “We like to say that the EX30 is small but mighty, offering everything you'd want from a Volvo, but in a smaller package. Like every Volvo, this is an exceptional product that is safe and designed around people and their needs.”
By design Volvo EX30 it follows its bigger brother, the model Volvo EX90, but with the addition of some unique elements. Thus we trace the closed mask, the digital version of the light "Thor's Hammer", split taillights and a similar dashboard layout. In the profile EX30 offers a soaring body line that ends with a thick C-pillar, creating the optical illusion of a “floating roof”.
Inside, there are four different themed design options and five different ambient lighting – each linked to a soundscape. To develop the best possible user experience, Volvo has worked with technology partners such as Google, Apple and Qualcomm, and has also worked with ECARX through a joint venture HaleyTek to develop "the best possible infotainment platform".
Volvo EX30 will also be available with a digital key compatible with different makes and models of phones and a dedicated app that offers all important car-related services (charging, location, locking/unlocking and heating). The car is also equipped with the latest generation of functions Park Pilot Assist, which enables easy parking in all types of parking spaces.
When it comes to charging, the variants with the NMC battery reach the maximum charging power 153 kW, which allows charging from 10 to 80 percent in just over 26.5 minutes. To replenish the same percentage of energy, the version with LFP battery needs 26 minutes at maximum charging power 134 kW.
In 2024, Volvo will also offer a variant on the market EX30 Cross Country, which will be more adventure-oriented with increased ground clearance, 19-inch black wheels or 18-inch wheels with dedicated off-road tires, skid plates, special black panels on the front bumper and trunk lid, and distinctive Cross Country badging. Orders for the EX30 Cross Country will begin in 2024, with production expected to begin later that year.
